Blue eyed girl.

Blue eyed girl.

After several requests form a bunch of blue eyed lovelies for me to do a post on how-to make blue eyes sparkle, I'm excited to share it! I'm super excited because this is the first blog post that I've done using someone other than myself to demonsrtate a how-to makeup tutorial. If there is a look or tutorial that you'd like to see, please send me a note and I'll do my best to create it!

For all my blue eyed lovelies reading this, the best tip to remember when selecting eyeshadow colors to compliment your eyes is to use any orange-based colors. Stick with coppers, bronzes, and rich golds. These work best! Also, when selected an eyeliner, try to swap out black for brown-bronze liner. This will give you a softer look while still playing up your baby blues!

Special thanks to the lovely Shannon Bender for being my makeup model. I had a blast talking about makeup & laughing all afternoon! It's nice to talk to another creative! xoxo

Big red!

Perfect red lips? Yes, please! There is nothing better than wearing red lipstick. The beauty of red lipstick is that everyone can wear it during any season! Here are a few of my tips that I always use to get the perfect red pout.

1. Hydrate: Make sure your lips are well hydrated. No cracking here!

2. Lip primer: I call this priming the pout! It extends the wear of your lipstick, it helps with feathering and bleeding. True story.

3. Use a nude liner: Not only are nude liners great for helping your eyes appear larger, they can also be a great lip liner. Give it a try!

4. Invest in a lip brush: I feel that a lip brush always goes unnoticed. It can be a great makeup tool. It helps lipstick go on easily and evenly. Plus, it comes in handy when your favorite lipstick gets discontinued and you need every little bit left in that tube.

5. Use a shimmer: Loose shimmer shadows act great as a great highlighter for the bottom of your lip. Give a try!

I hope these quick tips help you the next time you decide to go red!

xoxo

What's a Google Helpout?

What's a Google Helpout?

In November, Google launched what they call a Google Helpout. Basically, a Helpout is a paid live video chat with experts in a variety of different categories. Need help with your cooking skills? Get Kitchit cooking lesson from a real chef in real time while you follow along. Need help learning how to sew? Visit Sewing On My Kitchen Table to have a live video tutorial scheduled. And what about learning how to contour your own face or how to make your eyes look bigger with makeup? Now, you can have a Google Helpout with me! Click here to visit my Helpout.

Brillant, right? This is the next generation of social interaction. Instead of watching a video tutorial on YouTube, we now have the option of getting an expert to guide us step-by-step via video chat. It's customized just for us! Google's idea of a Helpout is "real help from real people in real time". How cool is that?

What I really love about the Google Helpouts is that all Helpout experts must be vetted and approved by Google before a Helpout goes live. The Google team makes sure that the Helpouts are given by true experts in their category.

For my Google Helpout, I will be focusing on three topics:

  • How to highlight and contour the face
  • How to use eye makeup to allow your eyes to look larger
  • How to properly apply foundation

I have made the decision to make my first Google Helpout free for anyone that wants to sign up for one! If you would like to do a Helpout with me, please send me a request time on my Helpout page! Click here.

Gorgeous Gams.

Gorgeous Gams

Have you ever put on (what I call) your first shorts of summer and quickly realized your legs look pasty and dry? Have you ever discovered brusies on your legs and can't remember how it happened? Have you ever had to shave your legs without water? I'm going to take a wild guess that your answered yes to at least one of these leg scenarios! This is the blog post for you!

I first discovered leg makeup when I worked at ULTA in college. I was on the hunt for something to help cover some major bruises I got after I took a nasty spill while jogging. My sister's wedding was just a week away and I was the Maid of Honor. The last thing I wanted was everyone to look at pictures of the bridal party standing at the alter with the beautiful bride and happy groom and zoom down to notice my mangled legs. It needed to be covered fast. It was in this desperation that I found Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs. It saved me and it has become one of my go-to beauty products.

Leg makeup is a true Hollywood secret for many celebs. Think back to Angenlina Jolie on the red carpet when she flashed that leg. Remember how much press that got? Did you see any bruises? Nope. Or when Kate Middleton made people chatter when she wore nude panty hose. Why did she wear them? Because they made her legs look thin. You can even contour your legs to add definiton just like you do with your face. The major bonus with leg makeup is it makes your legs look tanned and smooth so they look thinner while covering up any imperfections!

I want to share some of my favorite leg products just in case you find yourself in a 911 leg situation, too!

  1. CoverGirl Lipslicks Smoochies in Make it Sparkle: Fun little gloss to wear during any 911 leg siutation!
  2. Essie Nail Polish in Geranium: This is one of my favorite Essie colors for my toes! It's a perfect orange-red.
  3. EOS Shave Cream in Vanilla Bliss: I am currently obsessed with this shave cream. It has a light vanilla smell, tons of moisture, and my favorite part is you can use it wet or dry! Plus it helps to prevent razor bumps.
  4. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Smooth-on in Medium: I actually prefer the smooth-on better than the spray-on. It is so easy to use, covers everything, and is water and transfer resistant. I like the fact that it's easy to build coverage. The BEST!
  5. Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa Malibu Smooth Body Scrub: I will always be a fan of B&B Works! This is my favorite body scrub in beauty land. It has algae extract and Vitamin E to soften skin. Plus, I realy like the walnut shells that give my legs a physical exfoliation. Smells like summer in the shower!
  6. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Spray-on: This is the original one that I started using a few years ago. You spray the formula onto your hands and then apply directly to legs. Use your palms to evenly distribute the product so you don't have streaking. Great product!
  7. Jergens BB Body: Yep, BB creams have gone body! This is a really light coverage for the legs. I use this daily when I'm on the go and want to even out any discoloration on my legs. Use it like your daily lotion.
  8. Gillette & Olay Razor: This is my favoite razor (I've used them all). I like that it has the Olay skincare strips on the top and bottom of the razor to help moisturize my legs!
  9. Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa Super Rich Body Cream: Rich lotion that has Shea, Vitamin E, and Macadamia Nut Oil. Works well for my dry skin!

I've tried so many different leg and body makeup products from different lines. I always find myself going back to Sally Hansen simply because it works the best, is readily available to buy at any drugstore, and you can't beat the price!

Have a sexy legs summer!

Hey, lovely! You look tired.

Hey, lovely! You look tired.

Have you ever heard these awful words... "You look tired!" or my personal favorite, "Are you feeling sick?". Ugh! There have been days when I've reached deep (very deep) into my bag of magic makeup tricks to pull-off some sort of look. From late nights with my little guys to early mornings and everything in between here are a few tricks I've learned along the way! Your welcome.

1. Remove last night's makeup: If you accidentally fell asleep with makeup on (it's happened to the best of us) or you didn't have enough strength to properly remove all of it, be sure to use a makeup remover in the morning and clean any excess.

2. Use a deep cleansing face wash: Deep cleansing your skin is a great way to brighten your face. Make sure you use a cleanser that exfoliates as well.

3. Use eye cream with caffeine: Find a good eye cream that helps to reduce puffiness. This is key in helping to minimize the appearance of dark circles, too.

4. Moisturizer with SPF: On days when I don't have a lot of time to get ready, I use a mosturizer with SPF. This saves me one extra step! Never leave home without sunscreen on.

5. Apply a BB cream: I love using BB cream on busy days in lieu of foundation. It's quick, easy, and gives a bit of coverage that evens out my skintone.

6. Concealer goggles: Yep. Concealer goggles. Best way to explain this is to have you invision yourself skiiing (or swimming) and wearing goggles. You'll want to put concealer under and around your eyes in the shape of goggles. Use this when you need major help in the dark circles department. And don't forget to blend.

7. Apply blush: A little bit of color goes a long way.

8. Apply mascara: Never leave home without it. Mascara gives your eyes definition. Apply two coats if you can.

9. Apply winged out eye liner: This is one makeup trick that pulls my entire look together. It makes it seem like I spend way longer on my makeup than I actually did.

10. Wear your favorite glossI've always been a huge fan of gloss. It's simple and pretty. No lip liner needed. Win.

11. Don't forget dry shampoo: If you've been reading this blog, you know my love for dry shampoo. It's a real game changer when you are between washes.

I hope these tips come in handy (think: concealer goggles). I've done my job if you are able to hit snooze and get a few extra minutes of sleep knowing that you pull-off a quick makeup look.

p.s. - I've promised myself this Memorial Day weekend is all about rest and relaxation. We all need a Holiday (thank you Madonna for that anthem) to kickback, let our ponytails loose and watch the clouds roll by. Summer 2014 here we come!

The Lovely Video

Okay, so a few months ago I posted this promo video. You know, the one with a bunch of us gals having fun with makeup. A few days after it went up on my YouTube channel, I get an IM from one of my good friends (who is an attorney) saying I need to take it down.

Here's the conversation:

Friend: "Lovely, you can't use that Bruno Mars song."

Me: "Really? Why? I love that song! Did you see his performance at the Super Bowl...AMAZING!"

Friend: "Did you buy the rights to the song?"

Me: "Yes, on iTunes."

Friend: "Not the same. You are using it to sell something. Not for personal use."

Me: "I don't sell anything."

Friend: "Yes you do. You sell yourself."

Me: (No reply)

Friend: "Hello?"

Me: "Sorry. I was just laughing so hard that I couldn't type. You totally made me think of Julia Roberts in Pretty Women. I guess it makes sense."

Friend: "Trust me, just pick another song that is royalty free."

And that's exactly what I did. It only took me four months to find a great song AND here it is! The moral of this story is never use a song that is not considered "royalty free". You may spend some money to get something you really love but all artist deserve to be compensated for their work, right? (Sorry, Bruno! I still love you.)

Hope you enjoy it as much as I love it!

Special thanks to my pal Jeremy Whited from I Do Films for putting up with all my late night emails and text messages. We literally went through 10 other music options before we found this perfect song!

Brown-eyed girl.

Brown eyed girl.

Hi there! It's been a few weeks since I've written. To tell you the honest truth, I took a extended break to think about where I want my blog to go. I must confess, for a while there I was getting a bit caught up in the whole social media thing. I started to look at my Google Analytics way too much, made a hard decisions to turn down a beauty companies' offer to be one of their exclusive bloggers (mainly because I could only review their products), and started to feel a little stressed to continue to put out content that was Pin worthy.

I am so grateful I have ANY blog readers (aside from just my sisters)! I'm grateful for all the lovely messages and emails I get. I am so amazed that one of my tutorials has been Pinned 1100 times. But for some reason I kind of lost my way. I kept asking myself the same questions over and over: Is blogging worth it? Is anyone really reading this? Am I helping anyone? Do I still love this? My answers always came back to this... I love makeup. Period. I love everything about it. The history, the technique, the art, the creativity, the way it can transform. But most importantly, I love inspiring others to feel beautiful and try something different. That's the part I really love about blogging. Sharing everything I learned. I'm a real woman. I'm always learning. I'm always trying to be the best possible version of myself both inside and out. I believe every message, quote, and tutorial I've share on this blog... whole heartedly. And I hope you have too.

So... I'm back. For all the right reasons, to do what I love. Which is to share with you tips and techniques to help you look and feel your best.

This tutorial is for all my brown eyed babes out there. If you take away one thing from this tutorial, it would be to purchase a good gold eyeshadow (and to hug a blooger today). It will really help to make your brown eyes sparkle. Promise.

xx

Look good. Feel good.

Feel good. Look good.

Once upon a time, I had a personal trainer. I would meet him twice a week for weight training and cardio. I would even layer in two additional gym days all by myself (pretty good, huh?). I will always credit him for helping me come back from what I call, "The Baby Abyss". You know, that time right after you have a baby when you seriously start to question if your body will ever go back to the way it was. When I was at the gym, I would always notice how many gals either had on full-fledged makeup or not a stitch of makeup. Then there was me... the "No Makeup" makeup gal. I don't like to wear a bunch of makeup at the gym (for all the obvious reasons) but I do like to have some color and look put together.

After my trainer moved away from Phoenix, I decided it was time to try a new workout. Since then, I have been exploring all kinds of fun stuff to get active. Have you ever done a Barre class? Plus, my boys are getting super active and I love doing as many physical activities with them as possible. I adore this picture of Dean and I above, look how determined his little face looks as he runs laps to help raise money for his school. So cute.

So next time you decide to hit the gym or run around with your little ones think of these 5 beauty tips:

1. Spray leave-in conditioner on your hair: I love doing this. I am always short on time and I don't usually have the time to sit and deep condition my hair. So what I'll do is spray on a leave-in conditioner and throw my hair back in a pony tail. It works perfectly to deep condition my hair while I workout. After you shower, my hair wil feel hydrated. I've even tried a hair mask and that works too. Click here to see my favorite.

2. Tinted moisturizer: I use a tinted moisturizer that is water resistent to even out my skintone and add a bit of color. It is also has the benefit of SPF if you are exercising outside. Click here to see my pick.

3. Wateroroof mascara: A must-have when working out. Helps to prevent raccoon eyes! Try this one here.

4. Cheek stain: Cheek stain is the best way to guarentee that your color will not fade off. Plus you can also wear it on your lips instead of lipgloss so it stays longer. I love this one here.

5. Lipgloss: I like wearing a lipgloss instead of using a lip/cheek stain. I like and need the hydratrion on my lips. This one here is my fave!

p.s. - In February, I got an email from the person in charge of creating local buzz for the Reebok Spartan Race (have you heard of this?). The race going to be held here in Phoenix and they do challenges all around the world. Think Iron Man meets the movie 300. He asked if I would be interested in doing the challenge (they are trying to introduce more women to the race), give one of my readers a free race code to participate, and blog about all of it. I was out of town the weekend of the challenge so I couldn't participate, but take a look here to see how super cool and duper challenging it is. Yeah... anyone want to join me next year? You'll have to excuse me now, I need to start training to participate in the 2015 Reebok Spartan Challenge. Who's with me? We can use my beauty tips above!

Face your future: Aging

Face Your Future: Aging

Last week Marc Jacobs Beauty announced that Jessica Lange, age 64, will be the new face of his campaign. On that same note, Nars announced that 68-year-old Charlotte Rampling will be their muse. And just in case you missed it, Sharon Osbourne, age 61, can be seen in the new MAC Summer 2014 campaign along side daughter Kelly.

With all this age talk in the beauty world, I can't help but think of my own personal obsession with age. Let me back-up to explain... A year ago, I went with my parents to visit some old friends they hadn't seen in over 25 years. When we arrived at Loews in Tucson, my parents quickly introduced me to their lifelong friends. They both looked at me in utter shock... the lady friend instantly hugged me and pulled away slowly to stare directly into my eyes (it would have been totally awkward for 99.9% of people, but I am a hugger, so I went with it!). The lady looked at my dad and said, "Oh my goodness, Lauren looks just like your mother (my grandmother) when she was young."

It has been that very comment that has haunted me since. It got me thinking about what I will look like when I'm 75. It prompted me to ask my mom to send me any pictures she had of my grandmother at my age to see the resemblence. It's strange how you only remember certain people old, like grandparents or Sean Connery, right? You tend to forget that at one point they were the exact same age as you. Would I look exactly my grandmother? Would I age as gracefully as her? What about my own mother? Would I look as young as she does when I'm her age?

After my trip to Tucson with my parents, It was the first time I actually started thinking about aging in the real sense (as in passing of time and not just wrinkles). My philosophy on aging has been stolen from my oldest sister Maureen. She once told me: the beauty about aging is that you don't do it alone, everyone does it with you at the same time. We can't stop it. It will happen to you and me. With that very mindset (thanks Mo), I've always viewed aging as a beautiful thing. Something to embrace rather than fear. Something to prepare for and not run from. Something to be proud of and respected.

Do I want to be the best possible version of myself? Yes, of course. But that counts for me at any age. Do I purchase anti-aging skincare products? Yep, with the best possible ingredients to work their magic. Do I wear SPF religiously? Wouldn't leave home without it. Do I want to be 21 forever? No way! To be honest,  I didn't want to be 21 when I was 21... I wanted to be, well, older. Do I stand-up and clap for Marc Jacobs Beauty for featuring Jessica Lange as their new face? Absolutely! I think there are so many interesting factors that make Jessica Lange beautiful aside from just her physical appearance.

Between working for the skincare company philosophy and listening really well to my mom over the years, here are 5 aging truths I believe.

1. Family tree: if you want to see how you will age, take a look around at your grandmother, mother, and aunts. This has been so apparent to me when we do weddings. You get the chance to see three generations of women standing side-by-side.

2. Wear SPF: We all know that factors from the sun like UVA and UVB rays damage our skin. Never leave home without SPF. And don't forget your hands too! Click here to undertand SPF better.

3. Do something lovely: When you do something good you feel good. And that translates to the outside. Just look at a picture of any humanitarian. There is a glow about them.

4. Invest in good skincare: Take care of your skin. Invest in good skincare that works for your skin type. There are so many amazing products out there at every price point. No excuses.

5. Take care of your pearly whites: If you talk with anyone who is older, they will always mention they would have taken better care of their teeth. It's somethng that is so important to your overall health. Click here to see my favorite DIY natural teeth whitener.

What are your thoughts on aging? Do you have any truths that you would love to share? Have you had that moment when you realize that it's happening? Can you see your future self in a relative? When you do think about aging, think of what Mo taught me... you don't do it alone, we'll all be right there with you growing older together.

Make it pop!

Make it pop!

Happy Friday! This blog post was inspired by a reader named Emily. She emailed me last week to ask if I thought the look Jessica Biel has on (picture above) was wearable in "real time". Emily said she LOVED this look and was unsure if she could pull it off without looking like weird.

My answer: You bet you can pull it off! In fact, I think this look is so fresh and colorful -- perfect for Spring. Plus, this looks good on everyone. All you need to do is pick out a bold color that you LOVE. I told Emily, the way I like to think of bold makeup looks, is to comapre it to a special occasion outfit. We all have one outfit waiting to meet it's destiny sitting in our closets, right? Think of makeup the same way... I wouldn't wear this look to a job interview, but I would wear it to my sister Toni's house warming party in Scottsdale (while sipping a Mint Julep)!

Here are some other tips to remember when planning to wear this bold eye liner look this Spring.

1. Keep it simple: I would recommend wearing the bold liner on either your upper lash line or lower lash line. Not both. If you rimmed your entire eyes with this bold color it would just be too much!

2. Basic black: Add basic black liner to add a touch of polish to the look. It can go Rainbow Brite really quick it you don't have that balance -- trust me on this one!

3. Minimal makeup: Take it from Jessica Biel. Keep all other makeup minimal and simple. All attention is on your eyes. No need to add falsies or bright lipstick/blush to compete with that.

4. Color pop: Play around with differnt colors. My favorite bold eye liners are the Stila Smudge Sticks. The liners go on easily and the color pay-off is perfect!

5. Trend shop: You don't have to spend a fortune to get this makeup look. Many brands have similar eye liner colors for less than $5. I'll meet you at Walgreens!

I really hope you will try this look. If I can wear it (and be pictured next to the stunning Jessica Biel - I must really love you Emily!!!  ;), so can you!

And in honor of Friday and Jessica Biel's hubs, here is our jam! Happy weekend! xo

Pale is pretty.

Spring Awakening

I'm back! I took a week off from blogging to charge my batteries and to get a little soul food (thank you to everyone who sent me a little email to ask if my blog would be back soon!). Have you ever needed that? You know, just a little time to turn inward, to remember, to reflect, to refuel.

Last week, I was in Houston for a quick trip and was able to see one of my lifelong friends, Trish. It's crazy how fast time passes, but very comforting to know some things truly never change. Like two starry-eyed girls who giggle over witty conversation as we drive around a brightly lit city. Talking about where we've been, what we've felt, and hopes for the future.

If you had just one night and a few hours to reconnect with someone, who would it be? What would you do? What would you say? After my dinner with Trish, I couldn't help think about all of the memories that I cherish with her and with so many others. Some are good and some have helped shape me into who I am. It was pure soul food!

On the flight back to Phoenix, I chatted up a lovely gal sitting next to me and of course our conversation circled back to makeup. I told her all about my blog and she asked me if I would teach her how to pull-off a pastel Spring look without looking "scary" (as she referenced her InStyle magazine with Nicole Kidman on the cover). I thought it would be a perfect blog post since I feel like I found my own little Spring Awakening somewhere between Pappas and River Oaks that night in Houston!

Here are my tips for a pretty pale palette (For you Marion!):

1. Use a white eyehsadow base instead of a nude/flesh toned one. I find that with pastel colors, it shows up more with a white eyeshadow base. Try this one by NYX here

2. Using a pastel eyeshadow, create a "<" shape starting at the outer corner of your upper lash line and "<" it out half way under your lower eye lid. Select a eyeshadow that has enough pigment pay-off. I used this Revlon palette here

3. Use a natural colored eyeshadow as your crease color such as a basic brown. You want a small pop of color on the outer corners of your eyes only. Remember to blend, blend, blend to avoid it looking too harsh or scary!

4. Keep foundation matte with a pinkish lip and cheek color that compliments your pastel color pop.

5. Last, add mascara and a thin stroke of black eyeliner to give your eyes a finished look.

I hope you will try this look and reference my quick tips on how wear pastels subtly. It's fresh and different look  just in time for Spring --truly a pretty change of pace from the usual eye shadow palettes we've been wearing all winter, right?

p.s. - A few years ago I had the chance to see Spring Awakening (starring Lea Michele before Glee)! If it ever gets revived ... see it! It's a harsh depiction of that strange transition into adulthood. It has some major themes and cool music by Dunkin Shiek (yes, the Barely Breathing guy from the 90s).

Rose-gold is perfect!

Happy Galentine's Day! This is a day to celebrate us! Today is all about friendship, sisterhood, and likeness. I hope you kick-up your {cute} heels, have a glass of {pink} champagne, listen to some Beyonce {Drunk In Love} music, and celebrate with your gals!

And just in case you are having a night on the town or a weekend brunch with friends, here is a perfect makeup look -- Rose Gold. I want to share this rose gold look with you because it's so pretty and easy to pull off. I love the new Urban Decay Naked 3 palette that I used for this tutorial. If you try to re-create this look, and want to add a drop of illuminizer with your liquid foundation to get that dewy look --- use sparingly! If you have more of a oily skin type and don't like any shine whatsoever, just omit the illuminizer. I have dry skin so anything that makes my skin look hydrated, I am all for! Don't be afraid to add some falsies to the look to make your eyes pop.

Speaking of pop, it's noon somewhere, right? Bust out the champagne and cheers to us and this beautiful day. Thank you so much for all your love and support {and really kind messages}. You are awesome! Happy Galentine's Day, lovelies! xoxoxox

Office Beauty.

Work it! The business of beauty.

Happy Monday! Have we all had our coffee yet? Mondays are hard. Not only does Monday remind us of all the fun we had over the weekend, it also reminds us that we have a busy work week ahead of us. I am writing this post for all the gals that read my blog and need some tips on work beauty. I think the best makeup for a work environment is simple, sophisticated, and clean. Whether you work from home, out of your car as you travel all day, a small business, or a corporate setting, it's important to wear makeup that enhances your natural beauty without overwhelming your face. I put together 5 Tips For A Gorgeous Work Week -- things that would be perfect to stash at your desk or in your office and use when you need a quick beauty pick-me-up!

Tip #1. Concealer - don't leave home without it! Keep a extra one at your desk and touch-up as needed for a instant refresher. It helps!

Tip #2. Waterproof eyeliner - the last thing you want is raccoon eyes during a important meeting. Click here to see my post on how to further avoid looking like you got punched in the eyes at the end of the day.

Tip #3. Perfect nude lipstick - I think nude lips are classic. Especially if you have a meeting to lead or a big presentation to give. The last thing you want is for everyone's attention on your bright. bold lips and not on what you are saying. If you don't have a perfect nude lipstick, start your mission. Here is my personal favorite at the moment.

Tip #4 Cream blush - so easy to apply and a little color goes a long way! Plus, you will not get the, "Are you feeling okay?" question since you won't look so pale. Try this one here

Tip #5 Evian Mineral Water Spray - this is a must-have. It instantly hydrates the skin and revives your makeup. I have been a fan of the regular one for years, but I am happy this one is available! Click here to buy.

This should be a good week with Galentine's day on Thursday & Valentine's Day on Friday. Even though I'm already exhausted as I start this week, I am looking forward to all the love in the coming days!

xo

Galentine's Day 2014

Galentine's Day 2014

This year for Galentine's Day (February 13, 2014), I've decided I will be sending all of the lovely ladies I adore a Galentine's Day card to let them each know how much they make me laugh & how much I appreciate them!

I'm really hoping Galentine's Day will become an actual holiday on a calendar someday soon (how do we get that approved?). Wouldn't that be so awesome if we all took the day off from life just to drink pink champagne and eat chocolate croissants? We could listen to Beyonce on a loop & talk all day about nothing and everything. Our hair would be perfectly blown out, our makeup would be flawless, and it would be a perfect day outside to wear peep toe heels! Sounds like the best day ever!

If you celebrate Galentine's Day with your crew of loveliess and are thinking of exchanging little gifts, I put together 9 gift ideas they'll love. Here are some of my favorite picks.

1. Lady Boss: We love multi-taking products! Many of my Galentines have busy schedules. Anything that can save a extra step when applying makeup in the morning is always a plus. Give Stila Lip & Cheek Satin in Raspberry Crush

2. Mirror, Mirror: If you're like me, you can always use a compact in your purse or to keep at your desk in your office. How cute is this I Need Lipstick compact from Forever 21?

3. Pretty Polish: Give the gift of color! Essie Nail Polish is a pefect gift. You can never have too many!

4. Smarty Pants: I love gifting inspiring & fun pocket books that someone wouldn't ordinarily buy for themselves, but would really enjoy. I love Stuff Every Woman Should Know by lanna Kalb . Never hurts to know how to change a tire, right?

5. Lovely Lashes: Would doesn't want long lashes? Mascara is a great gift because everyone loves trying a new one. We are all on a quest to find the perfect one. Give Benefit They're Real Mascara.

6. Help Make A Statement: Help your pal make a statement with a pair of cute Kate Spade Earrings. The gift that keeps on giving (cuteness)!

7. Get Cheeky: This perfect Too Faced blush is called Something About Berry! For your gal that always gets your jokes!

8. Love Notes: For the Paris day dreamer! She will love correspondence Bonjour cards by Amy Borrell

9. Mwah: Friends don't let friends have chapped lips! Give lip balm by love & toast in cherry lemonade. Adore!

And just in case you need some fierce inspiration to get this month started...

pretty simple: how to use a mascara shield

{I just want to start this post by saying thank you for reading this blog! I wholeheartedly thank you! The main reason I started this blog was to share beauty tips & techniques I've learned along the way while working in the cosmetic and beauty industry for the past 10+ years. I'm sharing all of this with you just like I would share it with my own sisters. I hope you will continue to read and feel inspired just as you have inspired me to continue typing away at this computer.}

pretty simple: how to use a mascara shield

After I posted the 12 Days of Mascara, I got a few emails asking for a good tip on how to avoid mascara transfer to the top and lower eyelids when applying mascara. Instead of doing a tutorial, I thought it might be easier to do a quick video to show you how to use a mascara shield. I've been using a mascara shield forever. It is the best tip for avoiding that pesky transfer. If you ever have to apply mascara to someone else (even if you are not a professional makeup artist - think helping your grandma at the wedding or little sister doing their makeup for the first time) remember this tip. It's the easiest way to do it. I use a shield on all of our clients. Give it a try. I hope you have a smudge-free mascara day!

p.s. - Okay, it may not be "all the rage in the cosmetic tools world right now" (I can't help that I get so excited about these things!), but I've started to notice them a lot more, even at Target!

side note: The likelihood of getting a paper cut near your eye while using a mascara shield card is slim to none! When this happened to me on my lower lash line, I was in a elevator looking at the mirror and going down while in Las Vegas (hence the awkward chuckle in the video above). Probably not the best idea. Gotta love those moments. Oh the things I've done for makeup! Happy Friday!

Me and You & Dry Shampoo

Me and You Need Dry Shampoo!

Have you ever tried a dry shampoo? If not, you need to! It willl change your life. If you are like me, you don't wash your hair every single day. Some days, I just don't have the time. And how could we? It's not like we haven't been doing one or more of the following: studying for school, volunteering, caring for precious little ones, fur babies, or maybe even aging parents/grandparents, working (late on a presentation, of course!), traveling for work (middle seat again?), running your household (that laundry ain't gonna wash itself), spending time with your one and only special somebody, catching-up with friends & family, and trying to squeeze in a workout and that dentist appointment, right? Oh yeah, and don't forget to put on some lipstick while doing EVERYTHING! We are busy and (to be completely honest) it's so time consuming to wash and style hair every single day. We are not Beyonce. We don't have a full glam squad on-call at all times!

So, what's a gal to do? Dry shampoo. Say it with me. Dry shampoo. If you don't own one, you must! It will change your life and help to lengthen the time between washes. It absorbs oil from your scalp and hair in a snap! It's good for those days when you're in a hurry and don't have time to commit to washing and styling. Plus, hair stays healthy without blow drying and styling it every single day. Win - win.

I put together a list of 8 dry shampoos worth trying. You can find them anywhere from CVS to Sephora. My favorite is Bastiste (the one I'm holding above)! And my sister Toni swears by Pssssst. I hope you find one that works for you. Happy Dry Shampoo Day!

1. Bumble and bumble Pret-a-Powder {$26}

2. Batiste {$7.99}

3. Pssssst {$.5.99}

4. Aveeno Pure Renewal {$8.99}

5. Oscar Blandi {$25}

6. Not Your Mother's {$5.99}

7. Tigi Bed Head Rockaholic {$20.99}

8. Ojon Full Detox {$24}

p.s. - I love velcro rollers! They are so easy to use and give your hair MAJOR volume! Think Victoria's Secret model hair. Try them along with your dry shampoo for a perfect blowout look (that's maybe 2 days old).

Gorgeous in glasses.

Gorgeous in glasses.

I have worn glasses for as long as I can remember, My world changed when I got my first pair in elementary school. Being able to actually see the board in school was such sweet relief. I will never forget my first pair... They were red-rimmed with a tiny round picture of Smurfette on the arms. So cute! I knew at that moment in 1st grade when I picked them out, that glasses would always be one of the coolest accessories! In middle school and high school, I rotated between wearing glasses and contacts. Then, when I was in college, I found myself wearing my glasses more and contacts less. It was probably all those late-night study sessions that compelled me to give my burning eyes a break from contacts and wear glasses. Now, I try to wear my glasses as much as possible. Not only do I get so tired of wearing contacts (too scared to get lasik), but there are endless styles at every price point from Dolce & Gabbana to Warby Parker to choose from!

Over the years I've learned a few things about wearing makeup and glasses together. Most of my tips are from trial and error. It's never fun when you take off your glasses only to discover foundation all over them and not on your face.

Here are my 6 best tips for wearing makeup and glasses together!

1. Foundation: Go mineral or matte. I find that it is best to stick with a foundation that won't rub-off very easily. Just don't forget to set your foundtion with loose powder to absorb any oil and set foundation. Click here to see perfect foundations.

2. Eyelashes: Major volume and/or falsies. So much attention is focused on your eyes... you want to make a impact with your lashes. I would use volumizing mascara or even add falsies. One thing to mention if you decide to wear fake eyelashes: Give them a length test before guling them on. Sometimes, if they are too long, they can hit you lenses on the inside and bother you all day. Don't forget you can always trim them with scissors before gluing them on, too. Here is one of my video tutorials on how-to apply faux lashes in case you need a help with that!

3. Brows: Define the shapeThere's a reason Martin Scorsese rocks those brows! It is so impotant to define your eyebrows when you wear glasses. Especially if your glasses are on the bigger side, like mine. It helps to frame and balance your face. A must.

4. Lips: Be bold. I've found that I am always able to get away with a bold lip when I am wearing glasses. It's a perfect time to try a color that you've always wanted to wear. Oxblood, perhaps?

5. Cheeks: A bit more blush. Be sure to add a little extra blush to warm up your face. Click here to see some favorite blushes.

6. Highlight and contour: Give your face dimension. This tip is so important when wearing glasses. Areas like the nose, forehead, and under eye area are so important to highlight and contour. This helps to bring features we want forward and other features to recede. Click here to learn how to shade and hightlight.

This post is dedicated to all the gorgeous gals out there who wear glasses. Not only because they look cool (thanks Hipsters for making that happen), but because they need them to see! Hope these tips help next time you wear your lovely specs!

Don't Flake: How-To Avoid Raccoon Eyes

NO MORE RACCOON EYES!

The only thing worse than having raccon eyes, is not knowing you have raccoon eyes. Until (after an important meeting), you casually walk to the ladies' room and look at yourself in the mirror, only to find out that it looks like you got punched in both eyes. Are you with me on this one? Has this ever happened to you? Are you smiling right now because you can totally relate to this? Darn raccoon eyes! Don't let them get the best of you. It happens to all of us! Narrowing down the culprit that causes raccoon eyes can be tricky. Sometimes bad mascara is to blame, sometimes it's your body chemistry, and sometimes other makeup factors play a role. Women ask me how to prevent raccoon eyes all the time. I'm going to share with you what I tell them. Here are my 7 tips on how to avoid the dreaded raccoon eyes. I've picked up a thing or two over the years. I hope one of these tips works for you!

Tip #1: Try using a waterproof mascara that won't budge. It helps mascara from running, especially if you know waterworks are in-store that day. We use it on every single bride we work with.

Tip #2: Out with the old. Be sure to toss out mascara every 2 - 3 months. Old mascara flakes. We all know in our hearts when it's time to say goodbye! Say goodbye.

Tip #3: Seal your lashes with clear mascara. I like to compare it to putting clear polish on your nails to finish off your mani. Make sure your last coat of mascara is completely dry before you add clear mascara.

Tip #4: Try a lash primer. Similar concept to a foundation primer, it's main purpose is to extend the wear of mascara and prevent flaking. Many lash primers have added benefits like pro-vitamin B5 that helps to condition lashes. Another major bonus is that lash primer will increase the volume and length of your lashes. Win - win!

Tip #5: Avoid applying eye cream to eye lids. It may leave them too moisturized causing mascara to travel all over the place. If you can't give it up, wait until it is completely aborbed before you apply mascara or eye makeup.

Tip #6: Try tubing. Try a tube-technology mascara made with acrylic polymers that form tiny little tubes around your lashes. Once it dries it won't flake, smudge, smear, even if you cry or rub your eyes. How do you get it off? You need warm water and a bit of pressure to remove the mascara at night. It's really interesting to see the tiny tubes come off. I only wish it gave more length and volume. If you are thinking of giving it a try, I would go with Blinc.

Tip #7: Dust loose powder on you eyelids and over under eye concealer to absorb any mositure so mascara doesn't travel. If your eyes are not sensitive, you can also apply a light dusting of loose powder to your lashes. It adds volume and does help with flaking. Old school trick.

Give one of these tips a try! If all else fails, there are always lash extensions or falsies!

The 12 Days of Mascara Recap.

The 12 Days of Mascara Tips

Okay, I'm just gonna say it... that was a lot of mascara! In case you haven't noticed I take mascara very, very seriously. And why shouldn't I? According to mint.com the average American women will spend $3,770 on mascara in her lifetime (that's more than eyeshadow & lipstick). If we're spending that much money it better be on something that gives us results, right?

The beauty of living in this modern makeup world is there's so many great products at every price point. Gone are the days of paying a fortune to get a decent mascara. We have so many options! It's just a matter of trying them, finding out what works, then sharing the information. That was my goal with The 12 Days of Mascara! My greatest hope is that you NEVER buy another mascara that's a flat-out disappointment. Hopefully, these tips will help you the next time you're on the search for your perfect mascara.

1. You can never go wrong with Maybelline. Seriously. I'm a fan! For the price point and the results their macaras deliver. You can't go wrong! I purchased The Rocket & The Flasies (I didn't review Falsies on the blog), and was surprised by how good they are!

 2. Brush up on your mascara (wands). All the rage right now in mascaras is the unique wands. I've found the more exotic the brush, the more claims the mascara makes of being the best. Be sure to do your research on what kind of wand the mascara has before you make a purchase. It does matter. You want one that actually works and not just looks cool.

3.You don't always get what you pay for (sometimes you get more and sometimes you get less). True story. I think sometimes we forget the definintion of luxury and we automatically think that since something costs more it should automatically be better. A luxury item has extravagance. Meaning there are certain little things that just make you so darn happy.  It doesn't always mean it's the best as far as results. For example, I loved using my YSL Shocking mascara every morning because it smelled like rose water! Did it give me good results? Sure. Did it give over-the-top results that would help me justify spending $30 on a tube of mascara when Maybelline's The Rocket gave me great results at $5.99? No. Did I love waking-up each morning and smelling rose water to start my day? Of course! As consumers, it's really up to use to decide what's worth it to us and where we want to spend our money. Believe me, if YSL Shocking mascara didn't give good results, I would have toss it in my drawer of misfit makeup no matter how much I loved the smell!

4. Live a little, save a lot! ULTA and Walgreens are your friend. You can save so much money. Trust me. They always have a Buy 1, Get 1 Free deal going on with with makeup. It such a great way to try something new in the mass cosmetics department. Buy your favorite mascara and try something completely new for free! It's all about trial and error.

5. Curl your lashes. I curled my lashes everyday while reviewing these 12 mascaras. It helps to determine if a mascara is good or not. If the mascara holds your lash curl as the day goes on, it's most likely a keeper! Try it!

Thanks again for reading! If you have a favorite mascara that you swear by, I'd love to know. You can message me on Facebook here, leave me a note below, or email me at lauren@laurensnow.com. I would love to try it!

p.s. - In case you're wondering, I didn't find a "perfect" mascara. Three of them came really close (Maybelline The Rocket, Benefit They're Real & Smashbox Full Exposure) and got 4 out of 5 snowflakes. Thus, my mission continues... I'll keep you posted!

Day 12: Rimmel Scandaleyes Show Off Mascara

Day 12: Rimmel Scandaleyes Show Off Mascara

How many of you have ever tried a Rimmel product? Maybe the cool marketing with Kate Moss lured you in? Or maybe you wanted to get The London Look like their tagline suggests?

I've used Rimmel's lipsticks in the past and I really like them! I was so confident that their mascara would provide the same great results at a reasonable price point. Boy, was I wrong! I was so unimpressed with this mascara. I mean, it was not good. It flaked, smeared, and didn't provide length or volume! This mascara was way more Sid Vicious & Nancy than Kate Moss by the end of my day (I had major raccoon eyes). And that's not The London Look I was going for (at least not on this day).

Day 11: Avon Mega Effects Mascara

Day 11: Avon Mega Effects Mascara

How many of you have ever tried an Avon or mark product? This was my first time. I must admit, it is so fun to look through their campaign booklets!

Mega Effects mascara was featured in several magazines during the fall (including InStyle & Lucky). All the buzz has been over the Wonderbrush. It looks like a mini paintbrush. There is a major learning curve when applying this mascara. If you can get past that part without complete frustration, you have mastered this mascara. My biggest challenge with Mega Effects was the formula is too wet. I had to wait a few minutes for each coat to completely dry before applying the next one. As the night went on, this mascara started to flake. Overall, I think the brush is really neat and does a great job of showing results in just one coat, but the time it takes to get the desired look is way too long. I wish that the formula gave more length and didn't flake. Has anyone else tried this one?

Day 10: YSL Shocking Mascara

Day 10: YSL Shocking Mascara

It seems like I've given a lot of 3 out of 5 snowflakes during the past 12 days. The truth is so many of them have been average. I wish I had more to tell you, but that's the plain truth. Sad to say my beloved YSL was no different. For many of you that read this blog you know how much I adore my YSL lipsticks. They're amazing! The packaging, the colors, the peachy smell -- everything about them is perfect. Perfect! To be honest, I was a little biased (okay, maybe a lot!) going into my week with the YSL Shocking mascara. I had high hopes that the mascara would live up to my lipsticks expectations... Not the case.

So, can you justify spending $30 on a mascara when the overall performance is average? Maybe. There are a few small luxuries that did set it apart from many of the others that only YSL could offer.  If love scents (like I do), you will love the smell. It smells like rose water. Seriously, rose water! The lovely rose water scent was a nice way to start-off my day (it's the little things, right?). The mascara itself is a super deep black color which helps with the appearance of fuller lashes, total bonus. It also has pro-vitamin B5 which helped my lashes feel so soft. Aside from that, it's performance was okay. I expected for the price point it would blow all the others out of the (rose) water!

Day 9: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Day 9: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

I would be totally lying if I said that I didn't chuckle a little bit when I read the packaging for the fairly new Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. I had the same reaction when I first purchased NARS Orgasm blush years ago (real mature, huh?). It's fun, naughty, a tab bit silly, and (of course) over-the-top (it claims people in a clinical study saw 1,944% more volume)! I was sold.

The morning I used it, I was excited since I'm a big Too Faced fan. Better Than Sex, huh? Pretty bold statement for a mascara. For the record, I purchased this with every intention that it would be the best mascara I've ever used. I am so sad to report that it was not. My first reaction (from the first coat) was that it made my lashes look like I was wearing falsies, which I loved. But, as I applied the second and third coat, I felt like the formula started to clump. Not to mention, the tube is super heavy. Perhaps the tube had to be made large to support the hourglass-shaped wand? The hourglass-shaped wand ratio is supposed to help seperate lashes. I didn't feel it did a great job seperating mine. Because the tube is large, it has a big mouth opening, I found this caused a ton of product to build-up on the rim of the mouth (wasting precious product is a no-no). Also, the mascara flaked as the day wore on which really bothered me since this is a $23 mascara. It did hold curl really well, lengthened great, and I thought the volume was noticeable. Since this mascara it so new, I'm thinking that Too Faced will work out some of the issue with the tube? I will definitely give this mascara another try down the road after all the kinks are fixed.

Day 8: Studio Gear Definitive Mascara

Day 8: Studio Gear Definitive Mascara

Hi! I've been feeling a bit under the weather and today started to feel much better and back to blogging! With that said, I am excited to share the rest of my !2 Days of Mascara. Thank you for reading my blog and for joining me on my mission to find the perfect mascara,

I've become really familiar with so many Studio Gear products (LOVE their concealer and CC Cream), but I've never tried their mascara until now. I would compare this mascara to Lancome Definicils. It is a good consistent mascara and gives a more natural look. If you are looking for something that is basic, this may be a good fit for you as it does not smudge and holds curl throughout the day. Good solid mascara, but not my one and only.

Day 7: CoverGirl LashBlast

Day 7: CoverGirl LashBlast

I've always had a soft spot for CoverGirl. When I hosted my master class at ULTA a few weeks ago, one of the questions I asked the group was, "How old were you the first time you wore makeup and what was it?" I thought it was so interesting that more than half of group said the first makeup product they ever used was CoverGirl compact powder. For me, I was in 7th grade and it was CG LipSlick in Bronze Goddess!

So, (naturally with my love and fond memories of CoverGirl) I was eager to finally try the beloved LashBlast mascara. I mean if you do a quick Google search you will see that it gets 5 stars across the board. Since I am in day 7 of trying to hunt down the perfect mascara, I would say that I'm pretty qualitifed to distingish between something that is amazing and average. I'm sad to admit that LashBlast was super duper average. Did it give me length? Yes, but it was average length -- not show-stopping (by any means). The major flaw that this mascara had was it flaked on me as the day went on. Major no-no!

Would I buy this mascara again? Let's just say if my luggage went missing and I needed something to hold me over from Walgreens, I would grab Maybelline The Rocket first and if that was sold-out then I would consider grabbing CG LashBlast!

Day 6: Boots No 7 Fanomenal Lash Mascara

Day 6: Boots No 7 Fanomenal Lash Mascara

Have you stepped into a Walgreens lately? If you have, you've surely noticed the British invasion in the cosmetic section by Boots No 7. I think it's kind of fun that Walgreens is revamping their cosmetic department. Anyway, I've been really interested in giving this mascara a chance and this was the perfect opportunity! Plus, as I stood there infront of all the mascaras, I couldn't help but wonder if Kate Middleton has ever tried this brand. Just a thought! :)

Overall, I thought this particular mascara was just average. It wasn't terrible and it wasn't "fanomenal" either. It was just okay. You would think the interesting lash brush would provide longer length and more volume, but it didn't. One of it's claims was it helps give a fuller lash fan. I felt like it made a slight difference in my lash fan but only after 4 coats of mascara. Which is way to many to achieve results when the entire draw of this mascara is the lash fan deal.

I will probably try one of their other mascaras (just because I love all things British) to see how those are. I'll let you know if I find anything worth sharing!

Day 5: Lancome Definicils

Day 5: Lancome Definicils Mascara

Did you know one of these little lovelies is sold every 3 minutes in the world?! It's kind of crazy when you really stop to think about that, right? For the record, at one point in my life, this was one of my favorite mascaras. At the time (pre-Benefit's They're Real!), it was one of the first mascaras that actually provided real length that didn't feel so clumpy on your lashes. It has been a few years since I've used it, and boy was I surprised at how much the mascara world has changed when I tried it for this blog post!

The way I would sum up this mascara is that it really is a better version of your current lashes... it is super natural looking. If you look at the first photo in the last row, you'll see there is no sigificant difference between my left eye (that doesn't have mascara) and my right eye (that has three coats). I'm looking for the best overall mascara and this one is just too one dimensional for me. Plus, at this price point you have so many other multi-tasking options!

Day 4: Maybelline The Rocket

Day 4: Maybelline The Rocket Mascara

A couple of weeks ago, my fellow beauty blogger JJ Cowan (Secrets From Your Girlfriend) reviewed this mascara on her blog and gave it glowing reviews. I told her that I would give it a try! So I was really excited to buy it at Target for only $5.99 (JJ, this one's for you!)

You and I both know how expensive makeup can be. For the record, I will say that I don't always agree that just because you shell out a ton of money on something always makes it better. Although, when it comes to eye makeup (especially mascara), I'm always a bit leary of using less expensive brands because I'm afraid of the lesser quality ingredients used (there is a story here for another day) may have a reaction on my eyes.

That wasn't the case here! I was so impressed with this mascara! Maybelline The Rocket is a major dupe for Benefit They're Mascara (JJ, you're right!). Out of all the mascaras I've reviewed on my blog so far, this is the only one I felt truly volumized my lashes. I would say that if you are a more skilled mascara gal, you will love this one out of the gate. If you are not very comfortable applying mascara, you may have to give it a second chance after the first attempt at using it. The only major issue with The Rocket is it doesn't dry fast enough, you may get product transfer on you eyelids and under eye area as soon as you put it on. If you can look past that (of course you can for $5.99!), you will love this one as much as I do!
